The Calais Côte d'Opale Urban Area
With three partner cities, all by the sea, an area criss-crossed by canals and a nature park, the Calais Urban Community boasts a well-preserved environment, perfect for water sports and board sports, walking and exploring local heritage sites.
In the heart of the sea-front, where a number of major passenger routes converge, the Calais Côte d’Opale is blessed with an accessibility that is unrivalled: Ferry port (biggest in France), the Channel Tunnel, two European motorways, airport (business and leisure travel).
Working closely together, the urban area and its member towns provide a common touristic offer:
- Calais Côte d’Opale Tourist Office
- Promotion of the canals and the Majestine river shuttle service
- Sports facilities
- Major summer events (the Fêtes Maritimes with 150,000 spectators in 2014, the Festival des Violons)
Offering a new dimension and providing activities all year round, the area has undertaken the construction of a range of major amenities. In addition to HEROIC LAND, the seaside resort complex of Sangatte-Blériot Plage is also planned, with leisure activities (international standard golf course, balneotherapy centre) and accommodation. Headed up by a development subsidiary of EUROTUNNEL, the Eco Village Seaside Resort and Golf Club will cover 160ha, from the hill that overlooks the strait to the beach.
In this way, Calais is becoming a benchmark tourist destination. The accommodation capacity represented by these new developments (hotels, tourist residences) boosts current capacity by 700 high-quality lodgings.
